William Cummings was born in Sacramento, Calif. on September 29, 1976. In 1991 his family moved to Annapolis, Md. where he attended The Key School. After his junior year of high school he left to attend Simon’s Rock College of Bard, where he earned an A.A. in 1996. He later attended the University of Maryland and received a B.A. in Latin American History, while also earning a Certificate in Latin American Studies. While at UMD, he helped co-found Janus, the University of Maryland Undergraduate Online History Journal.
In 2004, he went to work as an Assistant Director for Grassroots Campaigns Inc. There he oversaw several dozen employees in their work as door-to-door fundraisers for the Democratic National Committee. While his office raised over $2 million in small donations, and added thousands of names to the DNC’s donor rolls, John Kerry and the Congressional Democrats lost in the November elections.
The 2004 defeat led him into a long period of political disillusionment, spurring him to pursue his own financial gain in the booming real estate market. He found success at the end of the Washington D.C. real estate bubble.
Because of the crumbling economy, he decided to cut his losses and to use his recent success to fund the pursuit of his longtime ambition to become a professional journalist. Currently, he is working to attain a M.A. in journalism from the School of Communication at American University. He plans to graduate in the summer of 2010 and to then begin a career in investigative journalism.
